... MARCHING IN THEIR FOOTSTEPS ...
Saluting Our Multi-Generational Band Families

Hi, I’m Ed Sarisley, percussion,’76.  My son Ed Jr is this years Band Council President!

Hi! I'm Alicia Helyer (color guard all 4 years, graduated 2000).  My father, Garry Helyer, `73 (alto sax, flute) was in the band and my younger brother (currently a sophomore in the UCMB, alto sax) is in the UCMB.
Both my father and I are KKPsi alumni!

Hi! My names Don Rey and marched in UCMB from '75 to '77. I'm part of a multi-generational UCMB family! I met my wife (Ann Bates Rey) in the Jungle and she joined UCMB from '77 to '79.  She is a former president of TBS if I recall correctly.  My sister Nancy Rey Quintiliani and brother-in-law Bob Quintiliani are also band alumni. In the next generation, my daughter Julie is a band alumnus ('02to '04?) and my daughter Jenny is a current band member ('06 to present).  Nancy and Bob's oldest son will be a freshman at UConn this fall, and last I heard they are still working on him to convince him to join the band! Hi, I’m Neal Montgomery, `73, trumpet: My daughter is a Sousa House legacy!  My dorm room was 303 Sousa house which I shared with roommates and fellow bandies Yale Goldman and John Begina.  Imagine my feelings of déjà vu when I moved my daughter Megan into her freshman dorm room – room 303 Sousa house!!! TUP!

And talk about passing on the baton ….

Here is a little info on the Kanes-- Elaine Gangi Kane '78 was the UCMB featured twirler under the direction of Alan Gillespie & David Maker.  She was part of the second European tour where the band and color guard performed at Wembley Stadium for an international soccer tournament, on the beach in Zandvoort, Holland , and in the ancient city of Cologne , Germany .  Elaine's daughter, Alyssa Kane, picked up the baton at the age of five and began collecting Massachusetts state twirling titles in short order.  Alyssa's first nationals competition was at the age of seven and she has continued competing nationally ever since, collecting national medals & championship titles.  She is the 2006 AAU Senior National Twirling Champion.  As a senior in high school, she was selected to be a part of the 8-member USA Twirling Team which traveled to Peru to participate in the International Festival of Spring under the sponsorship of the Trujillo Lions Club.  After a life-time of hearing stories about the camaraderie and exhilaration of marching with the UCMB, Alyssa enrolled in her mother's alma mater and continues the tradition of talent, unity and pride.  She is entering her junior year, majoring in English and business.  Her twirling accomplishments continue: she brought the silver medal back to UCONN from the NCABT Collegiate USA Championships held at Purdue this past February, and this summer, won 3rd runner up to College Miss Majorette of America at Notre Dame University.  The Kanes are featured in a documentary on baton twirling entitled, "Tales of Passing the Baton", and Elaine and her sister Diane Gangi George were recently inducted into the
National Baton Twirling Hall of Fame.

I'm Steve Filipek, trumpet '75, and I'm part of a multi-generational UCMB family.  My wife, Holly (Martin) Filipek, alto horn '76, and I met in the UCMB.  Our daughter Laura, also a trumpet player, just graduated with a Physical Therapy degree and spent 5 years in the UCMB.  And our son Christopher is a sophomore trumpet player currently in the UCMB.When the UCAMB performed last year at the Rent, all 4 of us were on the field at the same time...a record for the most number of Filipeks performing on a football field!  That record may be in jeopardy this year if my brother Rob, who played baritone with the UCMB in the late '70s/early '80s, joins us.
